Visage: Fade To Grey (The Tragic Story Behind The Song)
Visage: Fade To Grey (The Tragic Story Behind The Song). SYNTHPOP IS D3AD album pre-purchase HERE: https://www.anost.net/release/5B34/stephen-paul-taylor/synthpop-is-dead?fbclid=IwAR0fBz_iR_c3d-Ugt0L7gb8FWgcAA6lnuxriYSgl1P7ot9bW13lurM7g0gI Fade to Grey" is the second single by the British new wave band Visage, released on Polydor Records in 1980. The song was the band's most successful single. It entered the singles charts in late 1980, peaking at no. 8 in the UK Singles Chart and reaching no. 1 in Germany and Switzerland. Steve Strange was on lead vocals; the French lyrics were spoken by Rusty Egan's Belgian girlfriend Brigitte Ahrens "Fade to Grey" was Visage's second single, but their first release on a major label, Polydor. It was released in 1980, on the same day as the band's debut album, Visage. "Fade to Grey" charted around Europe in late 1980/early 1981, becoming a Top 10 hit in the UK, a Top 5 hit in five countries, and no. 1 in Germany and Switzerland. The song is sung in English and spoken in French. A remix by Bassheads/Andy Stevenson was released in 1993 to promote the Fade to Grey – The Best of Visage compilation (an updated re-release of 1983's Fade to Grey – The Singles Collection). The new version became a modest Top 40 hit in the UK, peaking at no. 39.[6] In 2008, Strange appeared on the BBC series Ashes to Ashes performing the song in the Blitz nightclub. In 2014, Visage released "Fade To Grey (Orchestral)", a new version of the song re-recorded with a symphony orchestra. This followed the band's appearance at the 2014 World Ski Jumping Championships in Prague, Czech Republic, where they played a ten-song set backed by the Czech Synthosymphonica Orchestra. The band also released an album, Orchestral, which featured several classic Visage songs rerecorded with the orchestra. DANCING QUEEN - Abba (Deep Dive) (DD#1)
Episode #1 of my new series in which I dive deep into songs I love. "Dancing Queen" is a Europop song by the Swedish group ABBA, and the lead single from their fourth studio album, Arrival. It was written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson. Andersson and Ulvaeus also produced the song. "Dancing Queen" was released as a single in Sweden on 15 August 1976, followed by a UK release and the rest of Europe a few days later. It was a worldwide hit. It became ABBA's only number one hit in the United States, and topped the charts in Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Germany and Zimbabwe. "Dancing Queen" also reached the top five in many other countries. Musically, "Dancing Queen" is a Europop version of American disco music. As disco music dominated the US charts, the group decided to follow the trend, replicating Phil Spector's Wall of Sound arrangements.[3] The song alternates between "languid yet seductive verses" and a "dramatic chorus that ascends to heart-tugging high notes." It features keyboard lines by Andersson, which accentuate the melody's sophistication and classical complexity, while Ulvaeus and Andersson interlace many instrumental hooks in and out of the mix. Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Fältskog's layered vocals have been noted for their dynamism, "[negotiating] the melody's many turns flawlessly." Lyrically, the song concerns a visit to the discotheèque, but approaches the subject from the joy of dancing itself. The music video on YouTube has over 397 million views as of January 2020, and has become ABBA's most recognisable and popular song. In 2015, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame.

SWEET DREAMS - Eurythmics (Deep Dive) (DD#2)
This is my second "Deep Dive" in my new series. The first was "Dancing Queen" by ABBA. "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" is a song written and performed by the British new wave music duo Eurythmics. The song is the title track of their album of the same name and was released as the fourth and final single from the album in early 1983. The song became their breakthrough hit, establishing the duo worldwide. Its music video helped to propel the song to number 2 on the UK Singles Chart and number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. It was the first single released by Eurythmics in the U.S. "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" is arguably Eurythmics' signature song. Following its success, their previous single, "Love Is a Stranger", was re-released and also became a worldwide hit. On Rolling Stone's The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time issue in 2003, "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" was ranked number 356.[3] Eurythmics have regularly performed the song in all their live sets since 1982, and it is often performed by Annie Lennox on her solo tours. In 1991, the song was remixed and reissued to promote Eurythmics' Greatest Hits album. It re-charted in the UK, reaching number 48, and was also a moderate hit in dance clubs. Another remix by Steve Angello was released in France in 2006, along with the track "I've Got a Life" (peaking at number 10). Commenting on the line "Some of them want to use you … some of them want to be abused", Lennox said that "people think it’s about sex or S&M, and it’s not about that at all".[4] Recording "Sweet Dreams" was created and recorded in two places, first in the Eurythmics' tiny project studio in the Chalk Farm district of London, above a picture framing shop, then in a small room at The Church Studios in North London. The home studio was equipped with a Tascam 80-8, 8-track half-inch tape recorder, a Soundcraft mixer, a Roland Space Echo, a Klark Teknik DN50 spring reverb, a B.E.L. Electronics noise reduction unit, and a single Beyerdynamic M 201 TG microphone. The gear was purchased second-hand after Lennox and Stewart obtained a bank loan for £5000.[5] Also purchased with the bank loan was a £2000 Movement Systems Drum Computer, one of only about 30 built, with the Eurythmics having to sleep for a few days at the Bridgwater apartment of the manufacturer while their early prototype unit was being assembled. The MCS Drum Computer provided drum sounds, and also triggered sequences on a Roland SH-101 synthesizer, used for the synth bass line. To fill out the complement of instruments, Lennox played a borrowed Oberheim OB-X for sustained string sounds. Their only microphone, a utilitarian model typically used for hi-hat, performed all the acoustic duties, including tracking Lennox's vocals.[5] Stewart recalls he was in a manic mood while Lennox was depressed. Stewart was upbeat because he had just survived surgery on a punctured lung, and felt like he had been given a new lease on life. Lennox was feeling low because of the poor results from past musical work. She perked up when she heard Stewart first experimenting with the song's bass line sequence. She "leapt off the floor" and started to fill in the song with the Oberheim synth.[5] According to Stewart, the record company did not think the song was suitable as a single as it lacked a chorus. However, when a radio DJ in Cleveland kept playing the song from the album, and it generated a strong local response, the label decided to release it.[4] Chart performance "Sweet Dreams" was Eurythmics' commercial breakthrough in the United Kingdom and all over the world. The single entered the UK chart at number 63 in February 1983 and reached number two the following month.[6] Although it is one of the most successful songs of the genre Synth-Pop of the 80s, it could not reach the first position, since it was blocked by the successful ballad of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler, only for a week. "Sweet Dreams" was the first ever single release by Eurythmics in the United States when it was released in May 1983. The single debuted at number 90 and slowly eased up the chart.[7] By August, the single had reached number two and stayed there for four weeks, kept from the top by the Police's "Every Breath You Take" before "Sweet Dreams" took the number one spot.

SOMEBODY THAT I USED TO KNOW - Gotye (Deep Dive) (DD#3)
You'll LOVE this sensational and fascinating DEEP DIVE into Gotye's ""Somebody That I Used to Know". At the end of the video, I feature many memes for your viewing pleasure. "Somebody That I Used To Know" is a song written by Belgian-Australian singer-songwriter Gotye, featuring New Zealand singer Kimbra. The song was released in Australia and New Zealand by Eleven Music on 5 July 2011 as the second single from Gotye's third studio album, Making Mirrors (2011). It was later released by Universal Music in December 2011 in the United Kingdom, and in January 2012 in the United States and Ireland. "Somebody That I Used to Know" was written and recorded by Gotye at his parents' house on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia, and is lyrically related to the experiences he has had with relationships. "Somebody That I Used to Know" is a mid-tempo ballad. It samples Luiz Bonfá's instrumental "Seville" from his 1967 album Luiz Bonfa Plays Great Songs. The song received a positive reception from critics, who noted the similarities between the song and works by Sting, Peter Gabriel, and American folk band Bon Iver. In Australia, the song won the Triple J Hottest 100 poll at the end of 2011, as well as ARIA Awards for song of the year and best video, while Kimbra was voted best female artist and Gotye was named best male artist and producer of the year. The song came ninth in the Triple J Hottest 100 of the Past 20 Years, 2013. In 2013, the song won two Grammy Awards for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Record of the Year. Commercially, "Somebody That I Used to Know" is Gotye's most successful and signature song. It has topped charts in the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand, as well as 22 other national charts, and reached the top 10 in more than 30 countries around the world. The song has sold more than 13 million copies worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling digital singles of all time.[2] It was also placed at the top of a number of year-end charts by Billboard Magazine (including the Hot 100, Adult Pop Songs, and Alternative Songs) and other record chart companies around the world. In January 2018, as part of Triple M's "Ozzest 100", the 'most Australian' songs of all time, "Somebody That I Used to Know" was ranked number 98.[3] "Somebody That I Used to Know" has been performed several times on major US TV shows such as The Voice, American Idol, and Saturday Night Live. It was covered by Canadian indie rock group Walk off the Earth using a single guitar played simultaneously by all five band members and by actors Darren Criss and Matt Bomer in the Glee episode "Big Brother". The hit song's accompanying music video was directed by Australian artist Natasha Pincus. The video, which has received over 1.3 billion views on YouTube as of November 2019, premiered on 5 July 2011. LYRICS: Now and then I think of when we were together Like when you said you felt so happy you could dye Told myself that you were right for me But felt so lonely in your company But that was love and it's an ache I still remember You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness Like resignation to the end, always the end So when we found that we could not make sense Well you said that we would still be friends But I'll admit that I was glad that it was over But you didn't have to cut me off Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing And I don't even need your love But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough No you didn't have to stoop so low Have your friends collect your records and then change your number I guess that I don't need that though Now you're just somebody that I used to know Now you're just somebody that I used to know Now you're just somebody that I used to know [Kimbra:] Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over But had me believing it was always something that I'd done But I don't wanna live that way Reading into every word you say You said that you could let it go And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know [Gotye:] But you didn't have to cut me off Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing And I don't even need your love But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough No you didn't have to stoop so low Have your friends collect your records and then change your number I guess that I don't need that though Now you're just somebody that I used to know Somebody (I used to know) Somebody (Now you're just somebody that I used to know) Somebody (I used to know) Somebody (Now you're just somebody that I used to know) (I used to know) (That I used to know) (I used to know) Somebody

Examining Joy Division's "She's Lost Control" - A Depressing Masterpiece (DD#7)
"She's Lost Control" is a song by British post-punk band Joy Division. Released on their 1979 debut album, Unknown Pleasures, "She's Lost Control" was first performed live by the band in June 1978[4] and draws primary lyrical inspiration from a young woman experiencing a violent epileptic seizure.[5][6] Two separate recordings of the song have been released: the version appearing on the band's debut album, and an extended, more electronic version was released in 1980 as a 12" single.[4] This 12" single version contains an additional verse not present on the initial version of the song, and was recorded in March 1980 at Strawberry Studios, Stockport, making this song one of the last studio recordings recorded by the band prior to the May 1980 suicide of their lead singer, Ian Curtis. On the US release of the 12" single, "She's Lost Control" appeared as the A-side (with "Atmosphere" as the B-side), as opposed the UK version, where the song appeared as the B-side to "Atmosphere Curtis primarily drew the lyrical inspiration for "She's Lost Control" from a young woman with whom he had become acquainted through his employment as an Assistant Disablement Resettlement Officer at a Macclesfield occupational rehabilitation centre between 1978 and 1979.[8][9] The woman had epilepsy and had been desperate to find employment,[10] yet she suffered seizures whenever she came to the exchange, which would greatly disturb Curtis.[10] At one stage, this young woman ceased attending her appointments at the occupational rehabilitation centre.[11][12] Initially, Curtis assumed she had found a job, but he would later discover she had died of an epileptic seizure.[13][14][15][n 1] Her unexpected death and Curtis's subsequent awareness and experiences of the stigma endured by individuals suffering from neurological impairments formed the lyrical inspiration for the song The composition of "She's Lost Control" centres upon Peter Hook's bassline, played high up on the neck, and a mechanistic drum beat played by Stephen Morris. For the song's recording, each drum was recorded completely separately, as producer Martin Hannett obsessively pursued clean drum sounds with no "bleed through" (when one drum's sound is added to the signal of another drum unintentionally) on songs he considered potential singles. Live, this song would be played at a faster pace than that upon the album, and much more aggressively, with Curtis often shouting the lyrics before the bridge sections. The syndrum used upon live performances of this song would often be more abrasive and louder in the mix than that used upon the studio recordings. On later live recordings, Curtis would play a keyboard line during the coda, one of only a few songs on which he would play an instrument Big thanks to Olga Usova for the subtitles and for being an amazing designer!

Na Zare (На Заре): The Unbelievable Story of this Synthpop Classic (DD#8)
Na Zare: The Unbelievable Truth Behind This Russian Synthpop Classic. I discovered the song, learned it and performed it all over Russia. It's a great song. (RUSSIAN TEXT BELOW) Na Zare: The Unbelievable Truth Behind This Russian Synthpop Classic. I discovered the song, learned it and performed it all over Russia. It's a great song. The author of the music and lyrics-Oleg Parastaev, in 1987 - keyboardist of the band "Alliance". The song was recorded in record time — in four hours, and the next day it was mixed at the Studio of Muslim Magomayev[2] sound engineer Igor Zamaraev. It originally appeared on the 1987 album Alliance 87. According to the editorial Board of the music site Sounds.ru, this is the song that most people associate with the band In March 1987[4] in Moscow, the video for the song was shot on the territory of Tsaritsyno Park. The clip was shown once at night on a TV show in the spring of 1987, but was soon lost. The digital version of the video was uploaded to YouTube on April 5, 2019 on Oleg parastayev's channel . During the day, the clip gained about five hundred thousand views, after which the channel was blocked. On April 9, the channel was restored[5] and, as of April 2020, the clip has gained 4.1 million views. In 1997, a cover of this song was made by the Krasnodar group Antenn MC together with DJ Jamm. There is also a cover of MAD DOG [4], released in 2001. In the winter of 2007, Eugene Grishkovets, the band "Curlers" and Renars cowpers made a cover of the song. The idea was born in Eugene Grishkovets: he recalled how he was shocked by the original version on his return from the army in 1988. He first lit the idea of Maxim Sergeev, and then called Renars Cowpers. At the very beginning, the original song is used, which sounds from the tape recorder. When creating the cover, they may not have immediately warned the Alliance musicians of their intentions, [6] but all references to the song are preserved, both in the official description of the creation[7] and in the video that was shot. On December 30, 2018, the singer Monetochka presented her version of the song in the Evening Urgant program[8][9], and on April 17, 2019, the song was performed by the Alliance group itself in the Evening Urgant Studio in honor of the program's birthday[10].

Hallelujah: How an Ignored Song Became A Legend (DD#9)
Hallelujah: How an Ignored Song Became A Legend “Once they went out on tour and then we got word that the record was a non-record, I didn’t see him for fifteen years,” he said. “I think we were both so embarrassed. I felt horrible. I felt like I’d ruined his career.” This is not to be confused with the Happy Monday’s “Hallelujah” or the Hallelujah chorus from Handel’s Messiah. Nosirreebob. I like to refer to this song as “the little song that could” because in 1984 CBS records had so little faith in the song that they refused to release it. Yet now, in 2020, there are 300 known versions of this song in existence. It’s a song that was written in a hotel in New York 37 years ago and just last week it was sung on an italian balcony during a pandemic and the video has accrued over 1 million views. This song has an incredible story behind it. As you might expect, I like tackling songs with interesting backstories and Hallelujah is no exception. This isn’t your typical top forty hit that was released and went straight to the top of the charts. In fact, the song was largely unknown until over a decade after its release. It’s steadily grown in popularity and now is seen as somewhat of a modern secular hymn for the ages. Be sure to stick around til the end where I’ll slap you guys around with some dank Hallelujah memes. Hopefully God won’t smite me for being (ahem) sacriligious. So grab your snorkel, hit subscribe, ding that bell and strap yourself in.1984. The year of Purple Rain and Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Soviet Union boycotted the Summer Olympics. Leonard Cohen’s career had hit a low point. Nobody was talking about him. His 1977 album, “Death of a Ladies Man”, a collaboration with Phil Spector , was not well received. It was a commercial and critical flop. His other album “Recent Songs” which featured Jennifer Warnes, was also a flop. So he was low. He was in a bad place. He ended his five year hiatus from writing. In 2001 he told Sylvie Simmons from MOJO that the bulk of the time between 79 and 84 he was visiting his kids who lived in the South of France. Family time. These years, however, weren’t entirely barren. In fact, in 83, he wrote and starred in the made for tv musical, “I am a Hotel”, which featured several songs in his narration. The storyline to this short film features all sorts of romantic liasons in King Edward Hotel in Toronto. Cohen features frequently, as an amused bystander. The film also features my personal favourite song of Cohen’s, “Suzanne” Fast forward to 1984. According to Anthony Reynold’s 2010 memoir, “Leonard Cohen: A Remarkable Life” Leonard Cohen was holed up in the Royalton Hotel on 44th street in New York where he wrote Hallelujah. Rumour has it one writing session ended up with him sitting on the floor in his underwear, banging his head on the floor. That head-bashing Canadian, Leonard Cohen was renowned for the copious amount of material he would write and this song was no different. In fact, he wrote 80 draft verses of this song. I kid you not. In any case, the Royalton is also where he met up with producer John Lissauer. They met at the hotel so Cohen could play him his new songs. He played them on a Casio. Lissauer was expecting an acoustic guitar. Lissauer was reportedly “surprised to see that he played them on a dinky little casio” but also amazed because with one finger you could play a whole band. It’s amazing! Technology! I mean, who would do that? Lissauer had graduated from Yale. He and Cohen had last worked together on the 1974 album “New Songs For The Old Country”. Strangely, they hadn’t spoken a word between these two albums. Not a word. Ten years. Were they angry at each other? Nope. I don’t think so. People get busy. Y’know? Sometimes you don’t talk to your friend for a few weeks, months, years... sometimes decades … it happens.

Kraftwerk: The Model (Kraftwerk's Emotional Masterpiece)
Kraftwerk: The Model (Kraftwerk's Emotional Masterpiece). This is my deep dive into Kraftwerk's biggest hit, "Das Modell" otherwise known as "The Model". Florian Schneider departed the earth much too early and I made this video in honour of him and his contribution to the world of music. This is the song history of the song, if that makes any sense. This song is a synthpop masterpiece that cannot be ignored. It was the biggest song of their career. I have a new format in which I show more of my face versus other videos in the series, which felt a little too "Discovery Channel-esque".
